What's a cookie?

A cookie is a text-only string of information that many commercial websites transfer to the cookie file of the browser on your computer's hard disk so that the website concerned, can remember who you are. A cookie will typically contain the name of the domain from which the cookie has come, the "lifetime" of the cookie, and a value, usually a randomly generated unique number.

Cookies are used, essentially, to capture personal browsing habits e.g. session tracking, storing site preferences, shopping cart contents, the identifier for a server-based session or anything else that can be accomplished through storing textual data information. You may refuse cookies, of any given website, by turning them off in your browser, this however, can result in some websites being rendered unusable.

A privacy concern

Most of these same websites claim that their use of cookies are quintessentially for the sole purpose of improving their website service, or by retaining users preferences are able to make returning visits to any particular site more "personalised". Cookies are not executable nor are they able to replicate themselves and therefore are not a virus, However, they can be used as spyware; Anti-spyware software may warn users about some cookies, as they can be used to track people – a privacy concern.
